Volume 9
Sugimoto and Hijikata meet for the first time, and Ienaga mentions Choan Kumagishi’s name as a clue to identifying fake tattooed human skin. Kumagishi is imprisoned in the Tsukigata Kabato Prison. At the Edogai residence, a battle ensues with Lieutenant Tsurumi’s subordinate Nikaido, who is trying to destroy evidence. They manage to escape, but are split into two groups.
To avoid being tracked, Sugimoto, Asirpa, and the others move unnoticed. You will find Kotan near the tsukigata. In that Kotan, prisoners who had escaped from Kabato Prison disguised themselves as Ainu people and were making counterfeit banknotes. Asirpa is captured and coincidentally meets Kumagishi. When Sugimoto learns that Asirpa has been captured, he goes on a rampage.
On the other hand, in the Hijikata/Shiraishi group, Shiraishi tells everyone that Kumagishi is the reason why Shiraishi is called the “Jailbreak King.”
Volume 10
The story begins with a scene where the bodies of prisoners are being buried in an Ainu village. This includes the corpse of Choan Kumagishi, who was killed by a poisoned arrow in the previous battle. Afterwards, the women of the village express their gratitude, and everyone enjoys Ainu cuisine made with giant ubayuri.
Shiraishi, on the other hand, gets scared and runs away, thinking that if Sugimoto finds out that he was secretly communicating with Hijikata, he will be killed. Then the 7th Division appears and captures him. Hijikata and Kiroranke try to help him many times, but Shiraishi is afraid of being killed and hesitates to run away.
Hijikata and Sugimoto join together and move to help Shiraishi. Use Suzukawa, a prisoner who survived the Ainu village, to go to the 7th Division to meet Lieutenant Colonel Yodogawa. Suzukawa was a master of disguise, but when he was discovered to be a fake, he was killed. Sugimoto and Shiraishi manage to escape and flee towards Mt. Daisetsu on an airship with Ogata.
Volume 11
Sugimoto’s group survives in the belly of a deer they hunted in the mountains in bad weather, but when they wake up, they find themselves surrounded by brown bears. They decide to descend in the direction of Tokachi and head towards Kushiro.
Keiichiro Sakamoto, the lightning robber, and Ogin, the viper, appear as a robber couple who go on a rampage in Hokkaido. They aim for tattooed human skin at a gambling house, but fall into a trap by the Seventh Division. At the end of the battle, Sakamoto is shot dead by Lieutenant Tsurumi, and Ogin also dies.
In Kushiro, Asirpa finds the remains of a strange deer and meets Cikapasi and Inkaramat. Tanigaki is mistaken for a culprit who kills livestock and wild animals, but the actual culprit turns out to be Shiton Anehata. Sugimoto and his friends hurry to the mountains because Anehata is at risk of being eaten by a brown bear.
Volume 12
Sugimoto and Asirpa struggle to find evidence that connects them to Anehata, but they meet Ryu, a hunting dog from Otaru, and use Ryu to search for Anehata, who has a gun. Anehata used female brown bear feces to smear herself on her body to calm the brown bear’s wariness. Sugimoto and his friends find feces painted on by people and approach Anehata.
Ogata and Tanigaki outwit the Ainu residents and flee to the mountains.
Anehata performs bestiality on a brown bear, and Tanigaki and the other Ainu residents who were chasing him, Sugimoto and others, encounter this moment. My sister had already died.
Sugimoto inserts the poisoned arrow that Asirpa missed into the brown bear, and the bear dies. Everyone dismembers the brown bear and mourns it in the village. Sugimoto and his friends get new tattooed human skin and drink together at night.
Volume 13
When Sugimoto and his friends arrive at Lake Kussharo and take a bath in the hot springs at night, they are attacked by a group of blind thieves. Ryu jumps on the enemy and manages to escape from the hot spring. They scatter and flee, but Ogata and Sugimoto find the bandit’s stronghold. When Sugimoto and Anji Toni are fighting, Hijikata appears and arbitrates.
We will finally try to break into Abashiri Prison. They build a temporary Ainu hut in a moat facing the Abashiri River and dig a tunnel while pretending to catch salmon. Kadokura, the guard, is in touch with Hijikata, and they plan a strategy at Kadokura’s quarters.
On the night of the new moon, Asirpa, Sugimoto, and Shiraishi invade through the skylight, led by Totanji. They meet “Nopperabou”, but it is a substitute, and only Asirpa is pulled up by Toni and runs away.
Just then, the 7th Division comes up the Abashiri River, blows up the bridge, and attacks to capture Asirpa and “Nopperabou”.
Volume 14
The 7th Division, led by Lieutenant Tsurumi, bombs Abashiri Prison and advances to the cells. Shiraishi and Sugimoto are fighting the guards and are unable to escape.
Inside the cell, the prisoners are released by Kadokura and fall into a state of panic. Sugimoto and Shiraishi discover a hole through which they can escape, and Shiraishi succeeds in escaping first. Sugimoto entrusts Shiraishi, to protect Ashipa, and Shiraishi heads to her. Sugimoto is rescued by Kiroranke and given Asirpa’s Makiri.
Toshizo Hijikata confronts Nopperabo and Inudo at the teaching hall. Hijikata manages to defeat Inudo despite being injured.
Meanwhile, Nopperabo escapes and meets up with Sugimoto. Sugimoto shows Makiri, and Nopperabo sees Inkaramat and Asirpa who have climbed onto the roof. Nopperabo checks Asirpa and is shot the moment he tries to say something. Sugimoto also gets shot in the head.
Sugimoto was alive. Since Asirpa seems to have gone to Sakhalin, he heads there with Sergeant Tsukishima, Second Lieutenant Koito, and Tanigaki.
Volume 15
Sugimoto and his friends meet Enonoka in Sakhalin and receive information about Ogata’s movement north.
Second Lieutenant Koito rents a dog sled and collects information in a Russian village. Sugimoto and his friends participate in a suchenka (traditional Russian competition between men) and face Maiharu Gansoku, a tattooed man who only fights against strong men. Sugimoto loses consciousness and runs out of control, but returns to his senses after falling into an icy lake. Sugimoto and his friends obtain a copy of Iwaseki’s tattoo.
Meanwhile, Ogata and his friends take Asirpa to the village where Wilku was, follow in her father’s trajectory, and encourage Asirpa to grow in order to obtain the code for the gold bullion.
Sergeant Tsukishima’s past is also talked about.
Volume 16
Asirpa and his friends find a musk deer in Sakhalin, and Kiroranke talks about her memories of Uiluk, and Asirpa also remembers her memories with her father.
Hijikata, Nagakura, and Ushiyama search for Doi Shinzo, a prisoner with tattoos who was known as “Hitokiri Yoichiro.”
Sugimoto and his friends chase the snatcher in Toyohara and end up at the Yamada troupe. Thinking that Asirpa and the others are still near Toyohara, Sugimoto performs a Harakiri show to get Asirpa to notice him.
Asirpa, on the other hand, had already reached Shizuka, near the border. Kiroranke was the perpetrator of the assassination of the Russian emperor, and Lieutenant Tsurumi was disseminating information to the Russian side that “the assassin would soon be smuggled into Russia from Southern Sakhalin.” Asirpa and his friends attempt to cross the border with the help of the Uilta tribe, but are shot at.
